Larsen comes to us all the way from Norway to share a fascinating account of his experiences as an amateur plant hunter.
Current president of the Norwegian Rhododendron Society, Jonny is an intrepid explorer for rhododendrons in the wild, especially in Yunnan and Sechuan, China.
Based on his three expeditions to Yunnan and Sichuan between 2010 and 2016, Jonny will show how plant hunting can be done by hard struggle but also the easy way. You do not have to be very fit to go plant hunting. It is always possible to be a “Rhododendron Tourist” in China and elsewhere. Plants vary enormously in nature, and even amateurs can make interesting and unusual observations.
Jonny’s travels are often published in the Journal of the American Rhododendron Society (JARS). He has authored books about rhododendron species, plant hunters and Rhododendron Gardens in Norway. Jonny has also written articles for the Rhododendron Species Foundation Yearbook, the Royal Horticultural Society, the Rhododendron, Magnolia and Camellia Group and magazine articles for Scandinavian Rhododendron Societies. He is a frequent speaker at meetings in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and was a featured speaker at the recent ARS 2018 Convention held in Bremen, Germany.
Now a retired physics teacher, Jonny has a small “backyard” nursery producing species rhododendrons for collectors in Norway and northern Europe, having one of the largest collections of species rhododendrons in Scandinavia.
