Philip Mac Dougall: The Hill of Death

Cerro de la meurte is the northernmost extension of the equatorial alpine ecosystem typically called Paramo. Loosely defined as closer than 10 degrees from the equator and above 3000 meters altitude, virtually all the land mass fitting these parameters occurs in northern South America with small extensions in to Panama and Costa Rica. This talk features a small discussion of the general ecotype then presents a visit to the alpine plants of the Hill of Death.

Philip is a longstanding member of the AGCBC and semiretired nurse. His 0.7 acre garden in Maple Ridge
focuses on woodlanders, perforce selecting plants not favored by Odocoileus hemionus. Many of his plants are grown from seed, often collected while travelling, others are sourced from growers around the planet. At the moment he focuses on hybridizing Paris and Epimediums but  is also collecting ferns and now raising Menzisia Rhododendrons from seed.  A fine collection of alpine troughs is displayed at the garden entrance. He is a frequent contributor to the Rhododendron Species Foundation yearbook and has sat on the boards of the AGCBC, VRS and OSNS.
